Earth Day

April 22nd is International Mother Earth Day!
For decades, environmental advocates from around the world have joined together on Earth Day to advocate, mobilize, and protest for global sustainability. After a devastating oil spill in 1969, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson felt compelled to speak out against environmental pollution and decided to join forces with fellow activists. Together, Nelson and his team hosted campus teach-ins to educate local students about climate change and inspire university communities to take action.
Fifty-five years later, the event has since transformed into a worldwide movement, receiving official recognition from the United Nations and garnering public support from across the world. This year is part of the larger Generation Restoration decade, named the year of OUR POWER, OUR PLANET™ to encourage investments in renewable electrical power and communities. As the Earth Day website puts it:
“By engaging in community initiatives, participating in local and national elections with renewable energy in mind, and making sustainable choices in daily life, individuals are the catalysts for change. This people-powered revolution demonstrates that when we unite our voices and actions, we can overcome even the most recalcitrant systems and create a cleaner, more equitable energy future for all.”
Of course, we’re no stranger to renewable energy as a solar company. It is our belief that true environmental sustainability requires a fundamental shift away from non-renewable resource reliance and towards a balanced, circular economy. We’ve worked for years to install and improve PV solar energy systems in the hope that one day, every business and homeowner will have access to affordable, clean energy.
As a locally owned and operated B Corp company, we also understand that none of this work would be possible without the power of our people. In fact, we believe that the success of an organization should be measured beyond its bottom line, considering factors besides the profits of its investors, to ensure company decisions benefit the greater community – and we’re not the only one. Thousands of other like-minded organizations will come together on Earth Day, uniting people under a common goal to improve our planet.
This year, we want to leverage our platform to bring attention to environmental initiatives in our community. That’s why we’re partnering with the Alberta Ecotrust Foundation, a local charity that leads and catalyzes environmental and climate action projects that enhance the well-being of Alberta’s communities. They fund, connect, and enable innovative initiatives that address pressing environmental challenges in our province. April 22nd is more than just a date. It’s a celebration of the inspiring progress being made towards environmental prosperity, an opportunity to find power in our communities, and a reminder that our work towards a healthy planet is only just beginning. Help us spread the word about OUR POWER, OUR PLANET™ by connecting with friends and family, volunteering in your community, and calling on local government representatives to advocate for a healthier plant. Finally, be sure to follow us on social media and use #EarthDay. Let’s keep the conversation going!
