Here in Calgary, we understand cold winters better than most. Just this week, weather officials warned Albertans of frostbite and hypothermia risks as temperatures dropped drastically across the province. That’s why we’re excited Tesla has released a Heat Mode for their latest home battery system — the Powerwall 3.
“With Heat Mode, customers no longer have to trade off installation savings with Powerwall charge/ discharge performance, yielding an improved customer experience which maximizes overall installation affordability and energy bill savings”
— Tesla
Heat Mode White Paper
By analyzing trends in solar and battery usage, Tesla’s Heat Mode can intelligently anticipate future power needs to efficiently maintain performance in cold weather. Once activated, the system heats itself at the cell level using dedicated resistive heating elements to further optimize its energy usage, even in extreme weather.
In fact, Heat Mode allows the Powerwall 3 to perform in conditions as cold as -20°C. In rare cases, if its environment drops below this temperature for a prolonged period of time and cells are unable to return to a operational temperature, the Powerwall 3 simply enters a deep sleep mode without posing any safety risks, making it an ideal option for Canadian climates like ours!
